We are really pleased to announce that LOL! Leeds Online is one of 10 ‘Destination Local’ projects chosen by NESTA from 165 applicants nationwide. As a result of this award, a very special LOL! mobile service will be coming soon!

The following is taken from a press release issued by NESTA in the last few hours:

Nesta, in partnership with the Technology Strategy Board, today announce the 10 projects that have been selected to kickstart hyperlocal media innovation in the UK… [and] will deliver the next generation of very local, mobile services such as news, public services and citizen journalism.
‘Destination Local’ was launched in April this year as part of a £1 million programme to identify the technologies, business models, content opportunities and challenges for a successful hyperlocal media sector in the UK.

In a blog post published this afternoon, Jon Kingsbury, Programme Director, Creative Economy at NESTA said:

There were a lot of proposals looking to develop mobile versions of existing services. The ones that stood out were those that concentrated on giving people information and services tailored to their geographical location and how this might enable audiences to find their service using a good user experience.
